Martin Enenkel's inspiration for the vosLED light bulb was the beautiful, warm light of a candle, a quality that Thomas Edison successfully replicated with his carbon filament lamp. However, Edison's design was not energy-efficient, a flaw that the vosLED overcomes. The vosLED's LED-filament consists of hundreds of low-power micro LEDs, arranged like pearls on a string, providing a warm light with a color temperature of 2,700 K, identical to conventional bulbs. The vosLED also boasts a color rendering index Ra of over 90, coming close to the maximum value of 100 achieved by conventional lamps with clear glass bulbs.
The vosLED is produced in Plauen, Germany, using a process similar to that of an incandescent lamp. However, instead of the traditional filament, the LED-filaments are inserted. The vosLED contains no toxic substances and can be recycled through existing process chains. The absence of a cooling element in the vosLED design also results in aluminium savings.
The vosLED fits into all lamp sockets with E14 and E27 bases, and emits warm light immediately upon switching on. It comes in ten versions for an operating voltage of 230 V, with clear or frosted glass and power ratings between 1 and 5.5 watts. The vosLED is also dimmable, with a list of suitable dimmers provided.
Markus Winkler, who took over vosla’s development and innovation section in Plauen, Germany, in January 2013, started the development of the vosLED. Production of the first lamps began in December 2013, and the vosLED with the RED DOT award-winning transparent ring has been produced since the autumn of 2014.
Despite the energy efficiency of LEDs, a small amount of heat must be dissipated when they are enclosed in a glass bulb. To overcome this challenge, the designers developed "transparent cooling" with a special filling gas. To achieve high efficiency, vosla uses a special mixture for coating the filaments, specifically developed for the vosLED.
The vosLED light bulb was awarded the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
